Cecil Travis starts for the Washington Senators

Cecil Travis was born August 8, 1913 on the family farm in North Fayette County. He graduated Fayetteville High School in 1930. Cecil turned down a scholarship to Georgia Tech to play baseball with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Travis started playing for the Washington Senators May 16, 1933 when he was 19 years old. He played shortstop and third base, playing with the Senators from 1933 to 1947, less the 4 years in military service during World War II. He had a .314 lifetime batting average, with a high of .359 in 1941. Travis was in three All Star games and played a total of 1,328 games. After retiring he was a scout for the Senators until 1956. He retired to the farm in Fayette County. He died on December 16, 2006 and is buried at Crestlawn Memorial Park in Atlanta Georgia
